Understanding Paint, Stain, and Wood Character

Maple

Maple has a very smooth and subtle grain pattern. The grain lines are soft and consistent, which makes it ideal for painted finishes or stains where you want a clean, uniform look without a lot of visual texture.

White Oak

White oak has a straight, linear grain pattern that is slightly more pronounced than maple but more refined than red oak. It provides a modern, natural wood look that is especially popular in contemporary and Scandinavian-inspired spaces.

Walnut

Walnut features a rich, flowing grain pattern with natural variation in tone. Its darker base color and dramatic grain create a luxurious and high-end appearance even before stain is applied.

Alder

Alder has a soft, slightly rustic grain with natural variations and occasional knots. It creates a warm, organic look that works well in rustic, farmhouse, or transitional designs.

Red Oak

Red oak has a strong, open grain pattern with visible lines and texture. The grain is bold and pronounced, which gives cabinetry a traditional, classic appearance and allows the wood character to stand out through the stain.

Paint Grade Maple

We use maple for paint-grade cabinetry because it has a very smooth and subtle grain pattern. This allows the painted finish to appear clean and uniform, with little to no wood texture showing through the paint.

Our cabinetry can be stained and painted in a wide range of colors to match your design preferences. While stain colors can vary from light natural tones to deep, rich finishes, the natural grain pattern of the wood species will always remain visible, adding depth and character. This means the same stain applied to different woods will look slightly different, as each species absorbs stain uniquely and has its own distinctive grain.

With paint, the process creates a smooth, consistent finish that minimizes or fully covers the natural grain, resulting in a clean and uniform appearance. Paint allows for greater flexibility in achieving specific colors, but it removes the variation and texture that comes from the wood itself.

Choosing between stain and paint is less about the color and more about the look you want to achieve—whether that’s highlighting the natural character of the wood or creating a more refined, consistent finish.
